On September 6, 2013 the UMBC Department of Asian Studies presented the dance troupe Yaksha Manjusha performing “Panchavati: The Story of Surpanakha.” “Panchavati” is a dazzling Hindi Yakshanga, a stage drama that depicts Indian epics through song, dance and dialogue. Yakshagana is a musical theatre art popular in the costal regions of Karnataka, and consists of two parts: a himmela, or background music group, and a mummela, a dance and dialogue group in colorful costumes.
